Here are some more...
Dear Mr. Hubert:
I would like to sincerely
thank you for creating the FS Project. This is my first year involved
in the
Stanley exchange. I teach 24 boys and girls in a grade one/two class
and we
have sent Stans to 29 schools worldwide, some of which I found on my
own using
search engines. For example, I knew I wanted a FS to go to Tasmania,
so I
searched for schools there and actually found one with the same name
as ours!
I also found a school in North Pole, Alaska whose address is on
Snowman Lane!
Teachers from these schools and others had never heard of this
project, and
they were excited to have their classes participate. My students'
excitement
was nearly palpable when I told them we would be sending a Flat
Stanley to the
North Pole!
All of my students have
been thrilled to host a visiting Flat Stanley. I found enormous parent
support
as well. What a wonderful incentive this project has been for my
youngsters to
develop their reading and writing skills.
Thank you once again!
Cherie Cremers
Hi Dale,
We have already
exchanged emails in the last academic year. You had kindly sent me
an old
invitation card with his Jeff Brown's signature on it. I am a
Grade 2
Teacher in Toronto. I am in my second year of teaching in Toronto
and
originally from Montreal, Quebec. Actually, my best friend is
Leslie
Sklavounos which you have a success story posted on the site! She
is the
one who led me through the project in my first year of teaching
here,
which turned out to be a success for me as well. As a result of
last years
success, Stanley was incorporated once again into my curriculum
this year.
I was driving
home today after the end of my parent/teacher interviews and I
reflected
on what the parents told me. They expressed that their children
eat,
sleep, dream etc all about Stanley! I just can't believe how much
Stanley
has made a difference in my life as a new teacher and for my
students in
my class. We have just begun Writer's Workshop and the stories are
all
about Stanley. At the top of the Christmas tree in the main
entrance of
our school stands our Stanley Angel and on the door of my
classroom a huge
Stanley Claus is displayed with a sign saying "Must Be Stanley,
Must Be
Stanley, Must Be Stanley Claus". For 3 weeks now we have been
signing the
version of "Must Be Santa" but replace the word Santa for Stanley
and the
kids love it.
We have just
finished reading Invisible Stanley as well as Stanley and the
Magic Lamp.
Last year, my students were disappointed that Stanley Flat again
wasn't
out on the shelves yet. But this year my class will be able to go
on an
extra adventure with Stanley before the year is through. I have a
few
questions for you. I have tried endlessly to get a hold of Jeff
Brown's
other books but everywhere I call they express that they are not
published
anymore. Do you know where I could get them, I would climb
mountains to
get these books. It is incredible how my ESL and lower students
have
improved their writing skills because of these books and I want to
continue providing my students with all of his adventures.
Again,
thank you for continuing your hard work for this site, it is a
real gem.
By the way, 6 visiting Stanley's enjoyed the Raptors game with me a
few
weeks ago. People stared and smiled as I took pictures with this
cute flat
paper boy, and I smiled back because he is more than just a piece
of paper
to me and my students, he is a part of our memorable learning
experiences.
Thank you,
Cynthia
Grade 2 Teacher TDSB
Hello
there.
I am an Assisting Adult at Montessori School 11 in Yonkers,
NY. I work in a Montessori Classroom with First and Second
Graders.
Last week the teacher I work with was out due
to
her father passing. I decided to take on the
Flat
Stanley Project with my students and change it around
a bit. I read them the original story about Flat Stanley and as a
homework assignment, I sent home letters
with each child stating that they had to hand
Flat
Stanley out to an Adult who they thought would take care of him
for the week. My student's parents were very creative I must
say. When they returned the projects back to
me at
the end of the week, I must say Flat Stanley
had a
hectic week. Not only did he go to work with one of my
student's dad's to the Post Office but he also slipped out of
his
seatbelt and ended up riding under a car tire
for
the entire week with my other student's
parents. I
guess that gives a new meaning to "Flat Stanley."
When the teacher returned she was very happy and pleased with the
Projects. We decided to keep them and turn them into a Classroom
book. We shared our Flat Stanley stories with
one
another at a "Flat Stanley" party which was
held
this week. The kids had a blast and really enjoyed
listening to the adventures Flat Stanley had last week with the other
student's parents. Thanks again for letting me be able to share
my
story with you.
Sincerely,
Marisa Buccini
My Special Education students in
Grades K-2 at Plains
Elementary School in Timberville, Virginia are HUGE Flat Stanley
fans! We have sent
our Stanleys almost every year for the past 8 years, and he has had
some incredible
adventures! It's amazing how "Flat Stanley Fever" can strike so
many, and
spark so many imaginations. We are preparing to send a batch of 13
Stanleys out into
the world this week (one is travelling across the U.S. in a motor
home, and one is going
all the way to Ireland!) and it sure will brighten our winter. In
regard to the
millennium, would it be interesting for Flat Stanley to prepare some
sort of "TIME
CAPSULE" to be opened in the future? Or perhaps several capsules to
be opened 1
year, 5 years, 10 years from now, or whatever is agreed upon. I
look forward to
seeing what other ideas people have for Stanley.

Merry Christmas to you. Our Flat Stanleys have been very busy
travelling around the U.S.
and after the holidays, they venture out to Canada, Australia, and
the Dominican Republic.
My students are really enjoying this writing project and they like
to receive mail and
postcards from around the country and now the globe.
Thanks
Chris Hockert
Dale..... I have had an incredible
response to this project
over here in
Okinawa with some that were just sent and some that were planned. My
kids are
having a blast at this time.
Thanks.
Dear Dale,
The Flat Stanley project has allowed my first grade class not only
to travel to the
mainland United States but also to find so many caring people. They
are totally in
awe of what different classes have sent us through both the mail and
the Internet.
They have touched fall leaves, buckeyes, cotton plants and seen
snow. Not something
usually done here. We have made lifelong friends because of one
flat boy.

Hi Dale
I hope that you had a great Summer Break.
I guess you have now forgotten that you have been on Holiday and are
now getting ready for
the cold winter ahead. We have just over 4 weeks left of our school
year, so thought
I would send a note about our Flat Stanley Year. It has definitely
been a great
success, and children from other years are asking if it will be
happening next year. One
Younger sister even hosted a Stanley one night when it went to her
house. We have had a
Father hosting one as well.
In a school where there is only one computer per 31 children, and
only one e-mail line out
of the school for 400 children, dealing with e-mail hosts has been a
worry.
I was delighted to see more names join mine from NZ, but that did
not really ease the load
for us. I think our tally must be near the 200 mark now. That is a
big ask for any
children, so I am really proud of the way they have kept taking them
home and hosting
them. Several children opted out this Term, but they were the ones
who had had know reply
to their first ones. A couple of my more difficult boys were really
keen to host them, as
was my special needs boy. I know that you advise people to label
their Stanleys, but this
is not always done, and as you can imagine with such a large number
flooding in, it has
been a nightmare to get the correct ones back to the correct places.
I have a funny
feeling that a class is going to receive some Flat Stanleys that
they did not actually
send us, as I had the name of a School and had to rely on your page
for an address - from
the USA this was an interesting exercise.
I am sending you an envelope by snail mail, as it contains things
that will not go through
a computer. In it I have included things that we send out (these are
for you), my booklet
from the beginning of the year, some photos (digital camera), and my
outline for our
Education Review Office (they were very impressed with the concept
and even entertained
some visiting Stanleys during their visit).
Have a great Christmas and a wonderful New Year.
Sincerely
Anne Cole
Hi there,
Our Flat Stanley was on Monday night's episode of "Everybody Loves
Raymond."
He was hanging on the refrigerator during a big scene. We sent
Stanley to visit the
aunt of one of my students. She took him to the studio and had his
picture taken with the
cast and crew. How exciting that Stanley is now a TV star also!!

Hi Dale,
Linda Ferguson, from Lake Charles LA. I am so excited about the FS
project. I
signed up last year and we are in full swing. I wanted to let you
know that I will
be featuring the FS project at the state conference for LA educators
this weekend! I
am also sending you the link to my class webpage. We have a link to
the FS project
with more pics to come. PLEASE feel free to use it on your FS page.
Or let me know what to do to get a mention on your site!
I also sent in a grant to a local grant foundation here using the
FS project.
We are preparing the children for the LEAP test in writing skills.
What better way to do
that than through the FS project. Please email me back and let me
know what you think of
the FS link, we created on our class webpage! <

I can't tell you how excited we
are about the Flat Stanley
Project! We are a school on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in rural
South Dakota; as
a result of this project are kids are getting a chance to share
their culture with people
from around the world. We have had some wonderful learning
opportunities; what
started as a fun activity has turned into a project that everyone is
really getting into.

Dear Dale, As my sister found your
site and
recommended that I look at it, we became 2 of the 3 schools in
Adelaide, Australia to
enjoy this programme. We both teach year 3s this year.
Both our classes have responded in
similar ways. My
class on a suggestion that they take a box to prepare Flat Stanley a
home, returned to
school after the weekend with unbelievable efforts. That continued
to grow as they shared
their ideas. I was constantly amazed as each child added some
feature to their home that
was unique. Other children in the school enjoyed their efforts. The
families commented
that they experienced a bonding time making the houses! We could
send you some photos.
Our homes are awaiting some
visitors now s we have
e-mailed many schools from the U.S.A.
The children enjoyed hearing about
other schools
success stories. We decided to share ours too. Our first Flat
Stanley was from New Zealand
and he arrived with lunch box, drink bottle, mobile phone,
sunscreen, umbrella and hat!
The children were most impressed. They have similarly dressed our
Flat Stanleys up to send
on his journey!
These are some letters from the
children outlining
some of their inputs into their homes.
Dear Mr Hubert,

Dear Mr Hubert
We like that you made up Flat
Stanley because it is good to fin d information about other people.
Some people get to
read different things that are in the Flat Stanley booklet that
wrote before another
person. Some people take Flat Stanley every where they go ! They try
hard not to rip Flat
Stanley. Our class made Flat Stanley houses.
From Travis
Dear Mr Dale Hubert,
Our class had made Flat Stanley
houses or rooms for Flat Stanley to live in. I put in a fridge with a
cardboard packet of
chips in it. Another class member and I put in carpet.

Notes and Successes
from the 1998 - 1999 School Year
Hi Dale,
I am a basic skills teacher at Carteret School in Bloomfield,NJ. My
second graders have
been involved in the Flat Stanley project and we have been having a
lot of fun.In fact, we
are in the process of planning a welcome home party for Flat very
soon. We are going
to have different centers.
In one particular center the children are going to trace
each other on bulletin board paper, so that they could be flat. On
the one side they
are going to color themselves in. On the other side they are going
to do some writing like
what they would want to do now that they are flat. Or write some
things about
themselves like: I am a girl? I like to play tennis etc.. and
have
others guess who they are. I think I am going to take my children
out
onto the playground where we have a huge map of the US and have
them find the
different states. They should be familiar with most of them because
Flat has been to
almost every state in the US. I was also thinking about baking
cookies and get a
gingerbread cookie cutter and have them decorate it so it looks like
flat stanley.
If you find any other interesting activities I would appreciate it
if you would send them
my way. This is the first year we are doing this and I want to plan
more exciting
activities for next year. Thanks Dale and good luck! Tara Sperduto
Bobby's Run School, PO Box 8,

We are doing an exciting thing
with Flat Stanley. We
are sending him, his journal, and details of the Flat Stanley
Project as it exists now 25
years into the future. We are doing this by putting Flat Stanleys,
journals, letters of
explanation, lists of participants, and a copy of the book into a
time capsule that is to
be buried at our new school dedication.
Sat, 12 Sep 1998
Dale,
I just had my open house Thursday night. My Flat Stanleys lined the
room!!!!! All 5
classes of them!!!
We have our packets just about ready to send off...
Parents were very pleased that students were doing this in a
language arts class. Because
of the maps and flags and Stanley displays, it first appeared maybe I
was teaching social
studies. I taught my first 11 years in an interdisciplinary middle
school, so I love the
FS connection.
Thanks for your ideas and your efforts.
Later,
Tea
Gainesville, FL
On Friday, we made our Flat
Stanley's. It was a great
morning. The students also logged on to the web and selected a
potential guest spot for
their Stanley's. E-mails have been sent. We will be taking a group
picture on Thursday and
will send you a copy.
I also took pictures of them making their Stanleys. We're sending
journals along with
them, so that others can write and record. This week we'll do some
sample educational
activities and writing about the project.
This has been a great bonding activity.

Notes
and Successes from the 1997 - 1998 School Year
April 26, 1998
My name is Terre Eldridge and I
teach the fourth grade in
Western North Carolina. We have been doing the Flat Stanley project
for 2 years with much
success. Not only do we have the students send Stanley to friends or
relatives, but we
also select several prominent people to send him to. Last year we
sent Stanley to our
Congressman and he took Stanley on a trip to Russia with him and
then personally brought
him back to our school. This year we sent him to our governor, who
took him to the
national Governors' Conference and then responded with a detailed
letter; Rosie O'Donnell
received Flat and then sent him back with a "Flat Rosie" to keep him
company,
and one of our students even received a 2 page letter back from
Senator John Glenn stating
that he may take Flat Stanley on his October mission into space!! We
sent him to the local
TV station where he made the rounds in several departments including
spending the day with
the news anchor person. This project is not only exciting for our
fourth graders, but the
entire school gets to see where Stanley has been when they view our
posters of his travels
and souvenirs.
Terre
Dear Dale,
I am writing to tell you of the
success I have had with your
Flat Stanley Project. I work with inner city children that don't get
to travel much if at
all. This year the children were required to learn about Mexico and
Canada in our Social
Studies curriculum. When we started to receive and send Flat Stanley
to these places they
made a personal connection to the information about these places.
During my lessons
comments would be made "I remember Flat Stanley came back with a map
of that town Ms.
Tello!". We also did several science projects with Flat Stanley, and
had writing
contests "The most unusual place I took Flat Stanley" The winner put
him in a
zip lock bag and took him in the swimming pool! We had so much fun
and learned a lot along
the way, thanks so much for all your hard work!!
Hello, Dale
I want to thank you for the great
project you've put
together. The students at both my schools have participated and
we've had a lot of
learning as well as fun working with FS. The high point was when a
grade 4 student from
Virginia, on her winter break, arrived at our school with FS in
hand. We are in Windsor,
Ont., and the school is an inner city school. The students, not to
mention the classroom
teacher, were thrilled with the visit. What a fantastic return on a
few stamps!
Dear Dale- Got your message in the
bulk mailing. Thanks.
Stanley has been a real success this year. Many parents have told me
how much their
families enjoyed this program and what a great motivator it is for
kids.
Suzanne Hughes
Hello Dale,
H is some email from my 2nd/3rd
grade students. They really
wanted to let you know what they think about the project. We use
Stanley connections for
geography, math, understanding differences in people, sharing
classroom and home
experiences, and we generate a lot of writing in email to our many
Flat Stanley partners.
It's a great open-ended, interactive project.
So long for now,
Terry

Dear Dale Hubert,
What I really like about the
Stanley project is that you can
send Stanleys to other Countries! and that you can design a Stanley
anyway you want. What
I think you learn from this project is to take care of other peoples
Stanleys, and to ve
poæa resit—sibilriF to whi6e in oo¶ logb d–. Why td youe "ke the book
Flat Stanley and turn
it into a project ? I think we should take a digital picture of a
Stanley and send him in
Email instead of snail mail! Bye!
From Mr. Smiths class: Bryn!

Dear Dale Hubert,
I like Flat Stanley because it is
neat how you can see
different Flat Stanleys. I think it might help us to learn how other
people talk. My new
ideas are you could make Flat Stanley's brother or your friend into a
paper doll.

========================================================
Dear Dale,
How did you come up with the idea
of making Flat Stanleys?
Well, we read the book Flat Stanley. Flat Stanleys help me learn by
taking care of other
people’s property. A new idea might be to send Flat Stanleys in
Email, or
send one to one place than they
send it to another place and
it will go around the world and it comes back in a year.
From,
Grant

Dear Dale Hubert,
I like the Flat Stanley project
because we get to
communicate with each other and get to play with each others Flat
Stanleys. Flat Stanleys
might help you learn by sending email. My new idea for the Flat
Stanley project is we
should send our Flat Stanleys, our Flat Stanleys logbook, a letter, a
picture of us,
clothes for them, and we should make toys for them.
How did you start Flat Stanley?
From Brianne

Dear Dale Hubert,
I like your flat Stanleys because
you can make them look
really cool!!! You might learn to make new E-mail friends faster.
You can send them in
E-mail instead of snail-mail. I really like the flat Stanley
project! We sent Flat
Stanleys too!!!

My class is still excited about
Flat Stanley and his
travels. We set a goal to have him visit all seven continents. An
Atlanta
radio station is taking him to the Winter Olympics for us! He has
also gotten an offer to
visit Antarctica. That was the one continent I was having
difficulty getting Flat
Stanley to. He has already been to Ireland, England, Australia,
Singapore, Africa,
Japan, Korea, Brazil, Canada, and about 30 of the states. My class
is learning quite
a bit about geography and other countries and cultures. We are also
exchanging Flat
Stanleys with other classes from your web site. Thank you for all
your trouble in
getting Stanley back on the web.

Flat Stanley has arrived in rain
drenched Hilo, Hawaii. So
far our class has received two visitors. The class noticed they were
both a little over
dressed. Particularly the one from Michigan. He came in a long
sleeved shirt and pants, we
were afraid he would melt the first day in our room. (Hawaii schools
don't have air
conditioning!) Flat Stanley is about to embark on a great Kapiolani
adventure. He has made
friends with my students and has inspired them to think and be
creative. I can not thank
you all enough for participating in this project and making my class
so alive this year. I
have never seen the kids this excited about any thing. We look
forward to sharing special
days with you through out the year.

I am writing to you about the
results of my Flat Stanley
Project. About 4 weeks before school started I sent a Flat Stanley
to the Atlanta Braves
since I am a huge Atlanta Braves Fan. Along with Stanley I sent a
camera. Yesterday I
received a journal, my Flat Stanley and 4 pictures had been taken on
my camera. I have not
developed them yet but the journal said that they were: 1) Flat
Stanley interviewing Jeff
Blauser, 2) Flat Stanley playing peek-a-boo with Greg Maddux, 3)
Flat Stanley watching
T.V. with Chipper Jones and 4) Flat Stanley in the announcer's
booth. I am so glad that I
have a real motivator for my students when they arrive on Monday!

Hello Dale,
What a great year this has been
for us. Not only were we able to get an Internet hook-up in our
classroom but were able to access with our very own personal e-mail
address. Stanley visited Hawwei as wmal as mery othe U.S.
ie citiad, Canatian citOns in O Nario, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.
He is presently visiting Rome and Alba in Italy as well as Harare in
Zimbabwe. In conjunction with our unit on the City of Windsor ( city
government, councillors and ward system) Stanley also visited the
Mayor's Office. Last Thursday morning, Mayor Michael D. Hurst returned
Stanley in person. Accompanying the mayor were two of his assistants
and two television cameras. Later on that evening we made the 5:30 and
6:00 o'clock news. The mayor has extended an invitation to us to visit
city hall before the end of the school year.
What a great project!!! Thanks a
million and yes, please
include me on the list. I will have the same grade level
at St. Angela School.

Dear Dale:
Merry Christmas and Happy New
Year!
Our Stanley project has been a
huge success. Stanley is finally on his way home from Australia! He is
also travelling around the world in the wallet of a former student. We
are tracking him on a world map. Writing skills have improved and the
creativity of the students is up and beyond anything I could have
motivated! Last week a Stanley arrived from Ohio and that night he went
to a roller skating party...rubber skates and all! Our photo album
continues to grow in leaps and bounds.
I have been asked to write up
this project idea in the form of a lesson for Teachers Helping Teachers
web site.... Dr. Scott Mandel asked if any teacher used information
taken from the Internet in their classroom....it will be the topic of
the week..... I've been working on it for two weeks in between the flu
and shopping, and will e-mail it next week. I gave you credit for the
idea... this has snowballed among friends and business people. Of
course we are not the Elmo craze yet... but it sure has developed an
interest in reading... we are presently trying to do something with Jan
Brett's book, The Mitten. My class has a better understanding of
character traits and supporting details. We are working on Stanley
Adventures in our learning centres. That's about the update. Hope you
have had success with Stanley this year.
Take care and after the holidays
my class has a letter for
you and your class. It has been on my desk for a week!
Just one of those weeks. You should see Stanley as an
elf!!!
Thanks again for such a terrific
idea!
Valerie
I wanted to pass on another
successful Flat Stanley project idea. I answered a request for a Flat
Stanley journal exchange with a grade 3 class in Australia. The whole
of 24 students each kept a daily diary for 2 weeks (Actually their Flat
mate did it for them) The journals were then mailed with the flat mate
to my grade 3. The flat person continued the daily journal here in
Canada for another 2 weeks (with the help of their new Canadian
friend). We sent back coloured leaves photos, etc to illustrate their
adventures here. We sent our Flat selves back with the journals. We
were lucky and got to go on their class trip to Under Water World in
Australia and sleep in the tunnel. We could see the sharks, etc
swimming all around us. It was so exciting for the children to get an
email back telling of the adventures at Underwater World. (north of
Brisbane). This project was more expensive than the normal exchange
(cost about 30-35 dollars for postage) but it was well worth it!
Dear Dale:
Just want to share an idea with
you. I contacted an Australian key pal who was very interested in the
Flat Stanley project. Our Stanleys are on the way to her with a
wardrobe, food and passports. Nicola is sending a kangaroo puppet with a
travel diary and some Aussie Goodies. She is also including a Kodak
throw away camera so we might record the kangaroo's visit to our
American school! I would have taken pictures anyway, but what a
thoughtful idea to include the camera. Postage is expensive enough and
if you include film, processing and so on..... you have a very
expensive project. We are having fun communicating with the Aussies and
Canadians and USA schools and so on...... My class is becoming very
creative and Stanley and cousins have visited Mom and Dad's workplace.
We will have a fond remembrance of fourth grade --- Stanley even went
to gymnastics practice;he got torn by accident, but Mom put a bandaid
on him instead of scotch tape! I think our Stanleys will follow my
students to college! They are very attached to them! Thank you for a
great idea! We have already read Invisible Stanley and Stanley and the
Magic Lamp!
Hello,
Please include our class again
for next years' project!!!!. We have had a great time this year.
Stanley has gone to Haiti with the peacekeepers, visited Holland,
Sweden, Egypt, Japan and most Canadian provinces. Did you know that
McDonald's is the favourite restaurant of every school we surveyed
internationally? The most popular T.V. show, even in Egypt, is The
Simpsons. We have made and received videos of schools, banners, art
work, restaurant menus, maps and souvenirs. Now he's exhausted! This
has been a great project for my class as all of the international
contacts wanted to continue as penpals so they could practice their
English. This has also been a learning year for us. I would welcome any
ideas for organizing Stan's in and Stan's out. Do your kid's keep Stan
logs? How do you track his comings and goings? I'm sure we lost track
during heavy traffic seasons that conflicted with school-wide
celebration times.
Thankyou SO much for this
wonderful idea.

Hi!
How is everyone doing with their
Flat Stanleys. My class has sent out about 18 so far. They have gone to
places throughout Canada, the US and the World. We have received e-mail
messages from Japan, Texas, Geneva, Paris, New Brunswick, California
etc. One boy sent his to Joe Carter of the Bluejays...we'll keep our
fingers crossed; however, he is no longer living in Toronto (where we
mailed it.) It has been interesting seeing the variety of Flat Stanleys
which we have received from life sized laminated ones complete with a
journal with a photograph of the senders and 4 entries. The kids had
fun taking this one to swimming lessons, teaching him how to do
cartwheels, taking him down the slide, eating lunch together, taking
him to Sherbrooke etc. We look forward to sending and receiving more
FSs. I really liked the journal idea but to save money with postage we
are sending a letter along with ours and then keeping a master
scrapbook with letters, e-mail messages etc.
Flat Stanley Rules!
This one is from Paula Mooney in
Brockville:
Wow did we ever receive some neat
stuff from our Flat Stanley contacts. For instance, one went to a dairy
farm and we received a book with a detailed description of a day in the
life of a dairy farm and photographs to boot, t-shirts, pencils,
erasers, music cassettes. One went to work at the UN in Geneva where
she attended a meeting and heard 6 languages being used at once, she
then took the rapid train to Paris and after a month in Paris she was
off to Cambridge England via the chunnel. She really enjoyed learning
about where Newton discovered the speed of sound, seeing the original
manuscripts of Winnie the Pooh etc. etc. etc. My kids are hooked. Some
have sent out three FSs! I think that this could become a tradition.
